INSET Courses & Workshops

On Friday 12th September there will be INSET courses and workshops aimed specifically at post-16 ('A' level) teachers, KS3 & KS4 and Primary teachers, and also for Higher Education staff involved in school liaison and/or recruitment and retention. For these sessions, speakers/facilitators will include: Sarah Maguire (Ulster), Phil Murphy (Leeds), Chris King (Keele) and Peter Kokelaar, Dan Faulkner, Dave Hodgson & Richard Worden (all at Liverpool).

Conference

For the main part of the conference to be held on Saturday 13th September we will welcome Professor Bill McGuire (Benfield Hazard Research Centre at UCL) and Professor Jim Marshall (University of Liverpool) as our two keynote speakers. Bill McGuire will talk about short term geological threats of global warming.  Jim Marshall will talk about climate change and deal with the impacts of climate change over geological time. (Visit www.liv.ac.uk/researchintelligence/issue32/midges.htm for more about Jim's recent research.) There will also be a series of lectures on other global issues (e.g. glacial lake outburst floods and remediation, recent climate changes and problem soils). In addition, a range of other activities have been arranged. These will include: investigating virtual fieldwork packages, using practical ideas for teaching at different levels, exploring the scope of forensic geology exercises, creating geophysics simulations and working with Earth Science experiments suitable for 'A' level Geology students. At the end of Saturday's events and activities ESTA's AGM will be held.

Field Visits

On Sunday 14th September a series of field visits have been organised. These will depart from Rankin Hall at 9.15am. and most will return there by 1.30pm. These will include visits to Brymbo to see a fossil forest, to Wirral to investigate its coastal defences or to study various Triassic environments and to Liverpool city centre to look at building stones. There will also be an opportunity to visit either the Clore Natural History Centre at the Liverpool World Museum or the copper mines at Alderley Edge. On these field visits the educational value of the sites used will be explored..

Liverpool Capital of Culture 2008

Liverpool, already well known for maritime heritage, architecture, music, literature, the arts and sport, had its bid for World heritage status, based on its famous waterfront and cultural buildings approved by UNESCO in 2004. Having been placed firmly on the global map, the city is now celebrating its year as European Capital of Culture 2008. Although nearly two million extra visitors will be expected to attend the many world-class festivals and events taking place in 2008, we are particularly looking forward to seeing you in Liverpool to celebrate the International Year of Planet Earth with us.
